The 61st volume of pirate manga One Piece sold 2,086,080 copies during the first three days of its official sale (Feb 4 – 6) -- as reported by the Japanese market survey firm Oricon. This volume topped the previous fastest selling record that was set by the 60th volume of the same series, making it the first book to achieve over 2 million sales in three days since Oricon started reporting on book charts in 2008.
During the weekend period, the volume achieved total gross revenue of 876,153,600 yen (about US$10.6 million), making more money than the top-grossing film in Japan, Gantz, which made about $7 million in its opening week. This 61st volume also set the record of having 3.8 million copies published in its first print run. To date, the entire series has cumulatively sold over 200 million copies.
