Distributed by Cinema Asia Releasing, Eleven Arts and FUNimation Entertainment, the classic Japanese anime sequel EVANGELION 2.0: YOU CAN (NOT) ADVANCE will be released in U.S. theatres on January 2011. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the distributors -- who previously released Japanese anime titles such as Dragon Ball and Fullmetal Alchemist to the American market -- are aiming to bring the animated sequel to between 70 to 100 screens in the US; however, the actual number of screens is still under negotiation.
Evangelion 2.0 was one of the top five highest grossing films in Japan last year, making $40 million at the domestic box office. It is the second part of the four-film series adapted from Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン Shin Seiki Evangerion, also known as EVA) TV animation series that was first aired in 1995 and still has a large cult following today.
