In early February, AKB48 producer Yasushi Akimoto announced plans for a Taiwanese version of the popular idol group. Now, production of the group has been confirmed, with the temporarily-named Taiwan48 looking to launch this summer. AKB48 is an all-girl Japanese idol/theater group made up of 48 members that are split into 3 teams; Team A, Team K, and Team B. Like their Japanese counterpart, Taiwan48 will also likely have their own theatre where they will hold daily performances.
According to Asashi Shinbun, a television program will be aired documenting the creation of the group: from the auditioning process to the training of the girls to become pop idols. Producer Akimoto has also expressed a desire to spread the 48 phenomenon to other parts of the world, and he has received offers from many countries including Singapore, Thailand, China, and Russia.
Given AKB48's popularity and the popularity of its sister groups in Japan alone, it is little wonder that Akimoto would want to expand to other regions of the world.
