Starting November 12, The Taqwacores is playing in theaters in Los Angeles and Irvine. Directed Eyad Zahra by and co-written by Zahra and Michael Muhammad Knight (who wrote the original 2004 novel), the film recently won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, in addition to taking home awards for Best Director, Best Ensemble Cast, and the Audience Awards. The film had premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Bobby Naderi stars as Yusef, a first-generation Pakistani engineering student who befriends a group of Muslim punks in Buffalo, New York. The film also stars Noureen DeWulf, who plays a burqa-clad feminist, and Dominic Rains as Jehangir, a '77 style punk Sufi hero.
The Taqwacores previously opened in NY on October 22, and a run in Seattle is scheduled to begin on February 11, 2011. For more information, go to their official website.
