According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anil Kapoor will be taking the 24 television franchise to India. The veteran actor, who played Kamistan President Omar Hassan in the eighth and final season of 24, will be taking over the Jack Bauer role in the Indian version of the hit TV show -- which follows a counter terrorist unit (CTU) agent in real time and covers 24 hours of one day in 24 1-hour episodes.
24 showrunner Howard Gordon introduced Kapoor to Marion Edwards, the head of international television at 20th Century Fox, and it took a year and a half for Kapoor to license the series to Kapoor's production company, Anil Kapoor Films Company, in India. While this is the first deal that has been made, Edwards said that she has been approached by companies in Japan and the Middle East who are interested in making their own versions of 24.
No other cast or crew has been attached to the project yet, but Kapoor aims to bring the series to Indian television by mid-2012.
Anil Kapoor has been a movie star in India for the last 25 years, but international audiences know him best for his performance in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Kapoor played the hot-headed game show host who tries to sabotage Jamal, the "slumdog" character played by Dev Patel. Kapoor can soon be seen in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, where he plays Brij Nath, an intelligence agent with insider knowledge that Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is searching for.
